The "Designer" Genus
Cubaris is a genus of isopods primarily found in Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand. They are famous for their incredibly diverse and often cute appearances—most notably the "Rubber Ducky" isopod, which looks exactly like its namesake.
"Cubaris aren't necessarily 'hard' to keep, but they are unforgiving. Success comes from mimicking their limestone cave origins."
Natural Habitat
Unlike the hardy species found in your backyard, many Cubaris species originate from limestone caves and tropical forest floors. This means they prefer:
Deep Substrate
They love to burrow. Provide at least 3-4 inches of substrate.
Lower Ventilation
They require higher CO2 levels and more stagnant (but not moldy) air than Porcellio species.
Substrate & Calcium
For Cubaris, calcium is not a supplement—it's a requirement. Their natural environment is limestone-rich.
The Cubaris Mix
- Heavy mix of rotten wood and leaf litter
- Limestone rock or crushed oyster shells mixed into the soil
- A thick layer of sphagnum moss on the hydration side
Humidity & Heat
Cubaris thrive in high humidity and slightly warmer temperatures than average species.
Humidity
Aim for 75-80% humidity. Keep the moss side very damp, and mist the dry side occasionally.
Temperature
Maintain 24°C - 28°C. They are sensitive to cold and can crash if temperatures drop below 20°C.
Diet & Behavior
They are shy and nocturnal. Don't be alarmed if you don't see them for weeks—they are likely busy underground!
Pro Tips:
- ✨ Protein: They love dried shrimp and minnows.
- ✨ Patience: Cubaris have smaller broods and slower growth rates.
- ✨ Stability: Avoid checking on them too often; they dislike disturbance.
